EUAM commemoration ceremony for EU personnel fallen in the line of duty

October 22, 2014

Contemporaneous with the official ceremony in the EEAS courtyard in Brussels, the European Union Advisory Misssion to Ukraine personnel assisted a commemoration ceremony in their provisional headquarter in Kyiv, for Pilar Juárez Boal, Mette Nielsen and Audrius Šenavičius, three colleagues fallen in the line of duty earlier this year in Afghanistan and in 2009 in Kosovo.

Currently the EU has deployed no less than 5 military and 12 civilian missions around the world, while 16 missions and operations have already been completed.

“It usually is not an easy task, as most of these missions operate in hostile environments. Although security and duty of care are main planning aspects in each single CSDP mission, there is never a 100% safety guarantee”, said EUAM Chief of Staff Anders Landen in his speech.

Exactly at the same time, in the courtyard of the EEAS building in Brussel, in presence of all PSC Ambassadors, President Herman Van Rompuy and the High Representative Catherine Ashton inaugurated a memorial stone, while EUMS and CPPC personnel laid wreath of flowers to the monument.

The EUAM staff observed a minute of silence in commemoration of their colleagues, who lost their lives while serving their CSDP mission.
