International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
June 19, 2026
On the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, the European Union Advisory Mission Ukraine reaffirms its solidarity with survivors and its commitment to support efforts towards justice and accountability. Conflict-Related Sexual Violence continues to be perpetrated in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, affecting women, men, girls and boys. In its recent report on CRSV, the United Nations listed Russia as a party that is credibility suspected of committing CRSV.
Sexual violence committed in war is a violation of international humanitarian law and a crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. EUAM Ukraine commends the work of the Office of the Prosecutor General aimed at ensuring accountability for CRSV. Ukrainian prosecutors and investigators are working tirelessly under extremely difficult conditions to collect evidence and build cases. The adoption of Law No. 4067-IX on urgent interim reparations of CRSV survivors was an important step towards justice for survivors. It is crucial that this law is being fully implemented without further delay so that survivors receive the remedies that they have been promised. EUAM Ukraine applauds the courageous work of Ukrainian civil society organizations and survivor networks whose dedication and expertise are vital building blocks in Ukraine’s path to justice.
The EU Advisory Mission is supporting Ukraine’s accountability efforts. As an implementing entity of the Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group, the Mission provides expert advice related to ongoing cases as well as specialized training, with a particular focus on support to prosecutors and investigators in regions close to the frontline. A strong legislative framework that upholds the rights of survivors is the foundation for sustainable justice efforts. EUAM Ukraine supports ongoing initiatives to implement the Rome Statue and the EU Victim’s Rights Directive. The mission also helps fostering exchange between Ukrainian law enforcement officers and their peers in EU countries. Earlier this year, together with the UN Team of Experts on Rule of Law and Sexual Violence in Conflict, EUAM Ukraine organized a study visit to Germany focused on strengthening domestic investigations and prosecutions of CRSV.
