International Women’s Day 2026: Leadership, Justice and Partnership in Times of War
Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day reminds the world that advancing women’s rights is essential for building fair, stable and resilient societies. In 2026, the global theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL women and girls” highlights the need not only to defend women’s rights but also to translate commitments into concrete actions and opportunities.
For Ukraine, this message carries particular weight. As the country continues to defend its sovereignty and democratic future, Ukrainian women are playing a decisive role across society – serving in public institutions, civil society, law enforcement, the military, humanitarian work and community leadership. Their contributions strengthen resilience and help ensure that justice, accountability and democratic values remain at the centre of Ukraine’s path forward.

This year, EUAM Ukraine highlights women leaders working within the Mission who contribute to strengthening Ukraine’s civilian security sector and supporting reforms aligned with European standards. Their experience reflects a broader truth: inclusive leadership leads to stronger institutions and more effective responses to complex challenges.
Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right. It is also essential for peace, security and democratic governance. Diverse perspectives improve decision-making and increase the resilience of institutions facing crisis. In a world shaped by conflict and instability, defending gender equality is part of defending Europe’s core values.
Supporting gender equality and women’s participation is also key to securing the EU’s neighbourhood. Inclusive societies are more resilient to conflict, manipulation and instability.
Equal access to justice is essential not only for protecting the rights of women and girls, but also for accountable governance, public trust, and social cohesion. By supporting Ukrainian partners to investigate and prosecute conflict-related sexual violence, EUAM Ukraine helps to address impunity and to bring justice to survivors.
EUAM Ukraine works closely with Ukrainian partners across the Ministry of Internal Affairs, law enforcement agencies and the justice sector to support reforms that strengthen professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights. This cooperation contributes to building institutions capable of protecting citizens and upholding the rule of law even in times of war.

Partnership lies at the heart of EU support to Ukraine. By working together with Ukrainian institutions, civil society and international partners, EUAM Ukraine helps strengthen the foundations of a modern, accountable and inclusive security sector.
International Women’s Day also serves as an opportunity to recognise the important work of Ukrainian civil society organizations and human rights defenders who support women’s rights and access to justice. Their work remains essential in ensuring that no one is left behind.
EUAM Ukraine remains committed to supporting Ukraine and its people – working alongside Ukrainian partners to strengthen resilient institutions, protect rights and build a future grounded in justice, accountability and European values.
