The EUAM welcomes the decision by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the Government to establish the National Police of Ukraine

The Ukrainian authorities have been apt in enacting the new law and have maintained a positive attitude towards European advice from the outset. EUAM has assisted in establishing the new National Police and updating the new central executive authority, which act as a subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine (MoIA).

 

EUAM welcomes the announcement by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk that he instructed the Ministry of Finance to ensure proper funding for the body, with particular focus on patrol police. The Prime Ministers strong emphasis on the protection and safety of police officers is also an important step in securing the proper function of the National Police in the service of the citizens of Ukraine.

The Head of the Strategic Advisory Unit to the MoIA, Mr. Alain Scolan, is currently developing suggestions for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine on how to organize the police on central, regional and local levels based on best practices from EU member. “EUAM and the international community will carry on providing support the new National Police in different fields like human resources, education, operations, community policing, public order, criminal investigations etc. Continuous support to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine in this reorganization and in the design of a new model of Police is a top priority of the EUAM,” says Alain Scolan.
